The Dolly Sods Wilderness in Grant Co., WV near Canaan Valley State Park and Resort diverse photo ops in a relatively small area. Spring, summer, and fall are easily accessable, but winter is limited due to snow. Forest Service roads leading to the Sods are closed in the winter, so hiking in is the option.
The Sods run north/south so morning sunrises alond the east escarpment can be magnificant at anny time of year. Several overlooks along the 8 mile length are available. A Few of the overlooks require a short easy walk from the parkiing area. The view east has Fore Knobs, valley, layered mountains. Spring and summer fog fills the valley. Easiest sunrise area to photograph is the far northern end of the road that runs along the east side of the wilderness. Huge sandstone formations add to the adventure of the eastern escarpment, easy walking to nice overlooks on the rocks. Fall colors bring out the Blueberry bushes which turn crimmson; most of the northern end of the Sods turns red starting in mid-September. Several sphagnum bogs and beaver ponds are found within the wilderness. Trails run throughout; the main trail follows Red Creek.
Weather can change at any time. I have experienced spring weather of sunshine, clouds, rain, sleet, snow, and sunshine all in a five hour time period.
Take I-81 to Harrisonburg, VA then US 33 toward Franklin, WV. Continue across US 33 to Mouth of Seneca, WV. At the Seneca Rocks Visitor Center or Harman's General Store ask for further directions. There are three differrent routes into the wilderness area, or contact me.
