Hi Paul,

I am not a Canon expert but from what I can tell the model number that ends in A004 is the newer model and more desirable of the two. It is also the only one shown on the B&H web site or Canon's site for that matter.

It looks like it (A004) focuses closer and comes with the tripod collar.

The spec's for the A017 model state..

The Closest Focusing Distance (2.5 m)
Maximum Magnification 0.13x
8 elements in 7 groups

and the A004 model spec's state...

Minimum Focus Distance 4.92' (1.50 m)
Magnification 0.24x
15 elements in 11 groups

Focusing one meter closer is a significant improvement and will allow you to use the lens for some nice perspective close up shooting of small subjects without having to add an extension tube or 500D diopter lens.

The older model's product number does not show up on Canon's web site, however it is likely there are still some out there new in the box being offered for sale..I would go for the newer model personally unless there was a major price difference and the funds were limited..

Hope this helps,
