We both love macro and are happy to share information with anyone looking for tips on closeups!

Photography in the winter garden is a special opportunity, with special problems. It is a time to set aside your normal ideas of garden photography, and open your mind to new possibilities. Think less of blossoms and bright colors, and more of shapes, textures, lines, and hidden subtleties.

Vivian Finkelstein, a volunteer at the JCRA, offers these suggestions: (You can find a map at the Visitor Center)

For bark colors and patterns. one could look at Bloodtwig dogwood in Winter Garden, Japanese crepe myrtles near Visitor Center and in White Garden, white London plane tree near arch entrance to White Garden, bright yellow styphnolobium in Plantsman’s Woods..

Light and shadow plays on desert plants in Xeric Garden and Scree. E.g. backlit Dasylirion, yucca, and feathery muhly grass. Also shadow play on stone walls from lath house slatted roof.

Shapes of bare trees seen against the sky. E.g. Japanese maples in White Garden and parking circle, magnolia buds on bare branches, weeping trees along cascade walk.

Color contrasts. Red berries on evergreen hollies and nandinas, purple berries on symphoricarpos near Visitor Center, pink Prunus mume blossoms against blue sky or grey walls, sprays of yellow mahonia blossoms against blue-green jagged foliage in Winter Garden.

Cascade. Water patterns, icicles and ice formations if the day is cold enough.

Birds everywhere. Bees at work in winter flowers or near their hives in the very back corner beyond the annual trial beds.

The outing is planned for January 22. We will nominally start at 2:00, but come whenever you’d like. The garden opens at 8:00 am. There is no charge. We’ll go to dinner at Neomonde, just down the street from the garden when the light fades, or we get too cold, which ever comes first.

Please email me to let me know if you’ll be there.

Pete
