Granite flatrocks, diabase dike, waterslide, waterfall, cave, beaver pond, piedmont cove forest, piedmont flood plain, chestnut oak forest, upland pine/hardwood, and other habitats and communities make the Flat Creek Heritage Preserve the most diverse protected area in the Piedmont Region of South Carolina. It’s most famous feature is Forty-Acre Rock, a large granite outcrop with vernal pools that house a large number of rare and endangered plants. The area known as Flat Creek Dike also houses a unigue geology leading to an unusual diversity of plants. Blue cohash, usually found only in the mountains, grows in the preserve.
