Shot this today on the Midlands outing. I found him just hanging out in the stream, no turning rocks necessary ;) . Used a 300mm lens, set ISO200 at F4 for 1/60. The depth of field was less than I'd like, but it was dark and I was trying to get as much shutter speed as possible to keep up with the restless little guy.

:) A wonderful shot, especially considering they don't hang around for long, and I too have not seen this color. Don Wuori ie sisu

I checked out an ID site a little while ago, and I found out it is a red-spotted newt. If only I'd known I could have caught him and used his eyes for a magic potion :p

Good shot Lisel. So far I haven't been lucky enough to even see any salamanders.

Great colors. Can't figure out the "water". Was he submerged--kind of looks like his tail is floating but his head was out??

No water at all. He's sitting on a mossy rock. :)

The color contrast of the subject versus the rest of the image is really cool.
Just looking at old posts and reminiscing, ah the good old days.

The contrast between the green and red is GREAT. And the shallow depth of field is a plus in my opinion. What needs to be sharp (eye) is sharp.
