CNPA Charlotte Region Outing
Saturday, March 8
Mabry Mill, Chateau Morrisette, and Blue Ridge Photo Tour
Leader: Russ Gavitt

Information forwarded from Russ:

We will meet at 7:00 a.m. in front of Stein Mart Department Store just off of I77 in Cornelius.

For those of you coming North on I77 take Exit 28 and turn left over I77 and then take your first right at the light and then turn left into the parking lot. NOTE:-there is a McDonalds and also a coffee shop if you want some refreshments.

We will then carpool and travel north on I77 to Exit 8 in VA and then go right, right, right and left up onto the Blue Ridge traveling North. Mabry Mill will be reached in 23 miles and be on your right side of the Blue Ridge Parkway. This is a real scenic spot. Make sure that you see all of the exhibits around the Mill itself and photograph the Mill from all angles. You will see opportunities for wide angle as well as standard and telephoto lenses.

Around 11:30 a.m. we will go three miles further north on the Blue Ridge and break up into small groups for lunch at Chateau Morrisette. The Chateau features gourmet entrees in the $14.00 to $20.00 range or you may decide to bring your own lunch. You will also be able to visit the Winery for wine tasting and purchases.

Weather permitting we will then travel on the Blue Ridge another three or four miles and stop at Rocky Top overlook.

We will then backtrack and take Route 58 towards Mount Airy N.C. so that you will be able to photograph some of the scenes that are so much a part of N.C. history and made famous by Andy Griffith as part of the Town of Mayberry.

Please call Russ Gavitt with your Cell Phone # and EMAIL address if you are planning to attend. His Phone Numbers are HOME 704-896-5523 or Cell Phone 704-904-6288.

WE WILL HAVE TO CANCEL THIS TRIP SHOULD WE BE FACED WITH A WINTER STORM SO WE DO NEED YOUR PHONE NUMBERS.

CNPA Charlotte Region Meeting
Wednesday, March 12
7 p.m. to 9 p.m.
Dowd YMCA, 7th floor, Conference Room 1 (formerly called the Advisor’s Room)

This March, we will again feature another Image Critiques session. This is always a popular evening and we are looking forward to another group of great images and tips from our new critiquers, one of which is our own Donna Eaton. Please note that there is no theme this month. As we have done in the past, there is a limit of 3 images per person (and even with this limit, it may not be possible to critique all submitted images depending on the number of entries). You are encouraged to provide digital images in advance to Don Brown (debrown@msn.com) by 5 p.m. on Tuesday, March 11. Name your images using the format of #yourname.jpg where # is the number 1, 2, or 3 and designates the priority of your images for critique. All #1 images will be critiqued first, and so on. Also, size your photos so that the long side is no more than 1024 pixels. If you choose to bring prints, please limit yourself to 3 prints with a minimum size of 8x10 and maximum size of 24x28, including the mat.

Audience: This Photoshop for Photographers seminar serves two distinct audiences: First, those who want to become more proficient with their image editing software, and second, those who would like to experience the world of digital editing before deciding to enter it.

Description: This course will guide the students through a simple digital workflow utilizing Adobe Photoshop CS3; however, this workflow will also be applicable to Photoshop Elements along with other image editing software programs. Once learned, this digital workflow can be easily adapted to the individual’s specific needs.

The digital workflow includes these primary steps:

CNPA Charlotte Region Outing
Saturday, March 22
Columbia Riverbanks Zoo and Botanical Gardens
Leader: Edgar Payne

Information forwarded from Edgar:

We will meet in the zoo’s parking lot at 8:45 AM so that we are ready to enter the zoo when it opens at 9:00 AM. The zoo typically does not get crowded until closer to noon when the light gets bad so using tripods should not be a problem. The zoo’s habitats are much closer together than the NC zoo in Asheboro and the enclosures are somewhat shallow so a mid range telephoto 70- 200 or 200-400mm range allows for good close ups. I would suggest bringing your tripod as well as a wide angle and macro, if you have it, as there are opportunities to use a wide range of focal lengths.

The zoo is located at 500 Wildlife Parkway just off I-26 at Greystone Blvd. Presently, we have 9 members signed up to attend, and if we have 15 or more we can qualify for a group rate at $7.00 per person. We must, however, let them know 2 weeks prior to our visit to be eligible for the group rate. If we do not meet their group requirements the admission will be $ 9.75 per person. Members holding an annual pass to the NC Zoo in Asheboro qualify for free admission.

Driving time from downtown Charlotte to the zoo is about 1 hour and 40 minutes according to Google Maps. It is just under 100 miles. Additionally, there is a botanical garden associated with the zoo and admission includes both. There is a tram that travels between the zoo and gardens running a regular schedule. In mid March I am not sure what will be blooming in the gardens but it is worth a visit. I suggest you check out the zoo’s web site at www.riverbanks.org for additional information. There is a map of the zoo as well as schedules of exhibits offering additional interaction with the animals. Food service is available but I suggest we dine at a local restaurant outside the zoo after our outing. I am looking forward to a wonderful day of GREAT photographs, rain or shine.

Please email Edgar (epayne3804@aol.com) if you are interested in attending this outing. In addition, if you have any questions, he can be reached via cell at 412/720-1702 or at work at 704/335-4794.
