Well we have a great trip lined up for SUNDAY January 16, 2011 to the ACE basin near Charleston. The trip will be led by long time CNPA Charleston member Bob Waters and will include opportunities to photograph The Swans at Bear Island as they take off at or shortly after sunrise and then hopefully the whooping cranes at Donnelly Wildlife Management area (which is closed on Saturdays) which is close to Bear Island. While I can't guarantee that the birds will be there they should be by that date, and there will no doubt be other birds, etc. to photograph. We will need to be at Bear Island well before Sunrise to set up and because of that I am suggesting that attendees consider staying overnight Saturday January 15 close to the venue. We will be staying at the Holiday Inn Express on US Highway 17 and I-526 -address: 1943 Savannah Highway, Charleston which is about 30 miles from our destination. (phone number for the Holiday Inn Express is 843-402-8300 and rate I got with AARP or military discounts was &90 + tax) If you decide to drive down that AM, which will make for a very long day, its important to note that our group will leave the Holiday Inn Express lobby at 6AM sharp. Other important details:
1. This trip is limited to 10 photographers so email me MrSisu@aol.com if you want to attend and it will be first come first serve. Please include your cell number as well.
2. Some of setting up will be done in the relative dark so you will need some light source
3. The minimum suggested focal length for this trip (without a crop factor) is 300 mm and more will be better - there may be a few landscape opportunities and of course you never know what you will see.
4. This will be a fairly easy trip with much of the photography done from very close to the vehicle
5. We may walk with our gear for up to 1/4 mile on a dirt road.
6. We may carpool some after we get to the refuges to limit traffic and to be able to find parking
7. It may be cold
