Our Midlands group had a wonderful presentation by Eric Horan on Low Country Photography. Check out Eric and his Lowcountry Wildlife Photo Tours. (eh@horanphoto.com and www.southernlight.biz) We had over 40 people in attendance and we announced our Dec 3rd Regional Meeting which will be held at the Grecian Gardens in West Columbia (where we have met for several years). More information to follow re times etc. We will have our regional photo contest at that meeting with members allowed to bring up to 2 images with the longest side no >1024 and brought in on a CD or thumb drive. The hand of man, if present, should not be the main theme and not occupy over 20% of the image. We also announced our speaker for our Feb 4th meeting which will be Robert Smith presenting on "Conservation Photography" Our region is hoping to increase our presence on the CNPA galleries and the image critique. We are pleased to add that Robert Kemmerlin will be posting directions on sizing images and sharpening image for CNPA web content. Keep your eye out for this as he uses a great technique.

Don asked me to post a technique I use to sharpen an image for posting on the web. This technique works with Photoshop.

After doing all of the standard cropping, levels, etc. on the full size file and you're ready to save a web sized file. Instead of saving at say 750 pixels on the longest side, save it at double the # of pixels on an edge that you really want (say 1300 pixels). Then open that file and do a FILTER>>SHARPEN>>SHARPEN (not USM) twice or until you see what looks like an over-sharpened image. It will look bad and you will think you have gone way too far. Then do another Save for Web but this time at the size you want it for posting. I think you will see a much sharper image than normal.

If anyone tries this with success post the image here. If you have questions post it here and I'll try to help.

Here is an example of this technique.
