My favorite butterfly shot from the Charlotte CNPA outing to the Magic Wings conservatory in Durham today.

(By the way, it was really nice to meet some of y'all today & put faces with names!)

The Postman is a butterfly native to Central America and northern South America. There is a lot of diversity in the wing patterns of this species that is related to geographic area. This Postman is Heliconius melpomene aglaope which would be found in the west central portion of northern South America (western Brazil, northeastern Peru, eastern Ecuador, eastern Columbia, & southern Venuzuela).

Nikon D200, Lester A. Dine 105 mm macro, f/6.3, 1/10th second, ISO 200, tripod, full frame.

Wow, what a beauty! Tack sharp. Looks like it's been in the pollen a bit.

curious...what is a "Lester A Dine" lens?

The Lester A. Dine lens I have is an older 105 mm macro lens made by Kiron. The reputation for these macros is that they are well built and capable of producing high quality images - which seems to be the truth for mine. Lester A. Dine developed a macro/ring light system for dental photography, and is still the leading supplier of dental photography systems: http://www.dinecorp.com/
