I've got a couple of friends that go every year. They really enjoy it.
FWIW - I personally enjoy those type festivals (having led field trips for a few), but photographically, it is often better to go there when there are fewer visitors... (like the weekend right after the festival when everybody has posted where they saw neat birds...). Of course going to the festival & staying a couple of extra days would also be an option...
Best of luck if you end up going down!

I agree! I am going to Tampa for Feb 14-17 with some buddies to do some winter golfing (although the winter isn't too bad here!!) and am making plans to stay over to visit Merritt Island and Venice Rookery.

One of my buddies just got back from a visit to the Venice rookery - he had a great time...

I was at the Venice Rookery on Jan 10th. There were only about 7 or 8 pairs of blue
herons there with some nest building activity getting started.
Just about as many photographers as birds with pretty long waits between flights.
Should be a lot better in late February and March.
However, Merritt Island was fairly productive. The spoonbills were in fine color.
