The Chapel Hill Botanical garden is one of the best places I know to photograph native N.C. plants and animals. I have seen birds of all types, field mice and other mammals, garter snakes, frogs, tons of flowers, salamanders, bugs, and a whole lot more. Spring and summer mornings are probably the best time to visit. Here's one of my many photographs from there. It's free. Directions can be found in this link.
