The Columbia Museum of Art is currently hosting "Ansel Adams: Masterworks From the Collection of the Turtle Bay Exploration Center, Redding, CA." This exhibit ends on Sunday, January 17, 2010.

According to the museum website (http://www.columbiamuseum.org/programs/exhibitions.php?exID=59), this collection of 47 gelatin silver prints by Ansel Adams (1902 -1984) represents a selection Adams made late in his life to serve as a representation of his life’s work and what he felt were his best images. Called “The Museum Set,” the full selection of 75 images reveals the importance Adams placed on the drama and splendor of natural environments. Included in Ansel Adams: Masterworks are many of Adams' most famous and best-loved photographs that encompass the full scope of his work: elegant details of nature, architectural studies, portraits, and the breathtaking landscapes for which he is revered.

Admission to the museum is free on Sundays, courtesy of BlueCross BlueShield of South Carolina.

Kathy & I are hoping to make the trip to Columbia one of the next two Sundays, either 12/27/09 or 1/3/10. If you are interested in joining us, please reply to this post or send me an e-mail (tomdills@earthlink.net). It should be a worthwhile trip to see works of one of photography's greatest masters.

Thanks for the heads up Tom. Check out this month's edition of Smithsonian for the piece on Adams' color work. Yes, I said color. He did in deed do some mighty fine work in color too.

One of my favorite images (now) of his was the Dawn, Autumn, Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Tennessee (1948) ... I didn't even know he shoot in the GSMNP.

Seeing these original masterworks in person was definitely worth the drive down to Columbia. And the company was even more special ... thanks guys and gals for a wonderful Sunday afternoon!

I hope the rest of you can get down there before the exhibit leaves in mid-January. Tom, thank you for the "heads up" on this wonderful opportunity (sorry you and Kathy weren't able to go today).

Thanks!
John

Kathy & I made the trek to Columbia today and viewed the exhibit. I must say it is an impressive collection of Adams' work and well worth the trip.

The show ends on 1/17 and Sundays are free!
