I got lucky down at St. Augustine and found this Green Heron with a clean background. I shot this last year on the Alligator Farm, he was high enough in the tree that I only got sky. I think he is missing a toe.

Now that is just about the best Heron image I have seen in a long time. Has all the elements and is just a great capture!!

Have never seen one of these guys high enough that the sky was the background. Very nice shot. Wonder what happened to his toe?

Hey Don,

Were you at the Alligator Farm that time we saw an egret with a clam attached to it's toe? The poor thing was bleeding. Artie was there and he said it happens in FL all the time. Basically the clam would not let go until it had been out of the water for 8 hours, something to do with tides and how long a clam can survive out of water. I got a bunch of pictures but it was looking into the sun and the image quality was poor.

In today's T&D newspaper there is an article about it happening recently at Hilton Head.

Here is a link to the article: Egret story (http://www.thetandd.com/articles/2007/11/24/ap-state-sc/d8t3ij700.txt)

The sky background is so uncluttered you run the risk of people thinking you selected this bird in Photoshop and hit the light blue color swatch. This would be a perfect shot for your next newsletter article so I could put the title headline in the wide blue. You need to write such an article with all your Good! Bird Shots.

Bob, while I'm not opposed to using all the tools available to me to make an image look better, in this case this is how it came out of the camera after a significant crop. I have posted a comment before that over the past few years I have changed my technique in that I look at the background as much as the subject when composing the frame. I have lots of images of great subjects with crappy backgrounds that I don't use. I try to make the best of the situation when I have the option by moving my camera to get the best angle possible.

I'd be happy to write an article for the newsletter about bird photography, although I'm sure we have many members that are more talented than I out there that would be willing as well.

Great shot, Robert. Almost looks like the green heron we saw the day I met you at the Alligator Farm!

Robert,

Well I think you're right, I "thought" I remembered a green heron at the Audubon Swamp but now that you remind me I think it was at the Alligator Farm. I guess this old mind is beginning to fail, next time I'll look at the RAW file. I keep the location in every file name as a RAW file, once I convert to tiff I drop the location and use a more descriptive name.

Thanks for keeping me straight.:) :) :)
