Our first meeting was held on Saturday, January 3rd, and it was very successful. We had 11 OBX members and one Triad Region member attend our meeting. We were able to organize some outings and meetings for this year. I have posted them on the calendar on the OBX website. Some outings we have yet to decide the time for, so you might want to ignore the time displayed on the website calendar if "details TBA" is shown on the website calendar. I will be sending reminder emails for all outings and meetings with the time, date and details.

We will be having our monthly outings on the 2nd Saturday of each month except for March and November. We have planned the following outings so far.

February 14, 2009 - Lake Mattamuskeet NWR

March 21, 2009 - Alligator River NWR

April 11, 2009 - Corova on the northern Outer Banks.

May 9, 2009 - Merchants Millpond State Park

June 13, 2009 - Botanical Gardens in Norfolk, VA

July 11, 2009 - Wanchese Harbor

November 21, 2009 - Chincoteague NWR on the Eastern Shore of Virginia

Also, Bill Edmonds mentioned the possibility of having an extended outing to Southwest Florida in April. He will be looking into organizing this outing for whomever is interested in a Florida outing.

The outings for August, September, October and December will be announced soon.

We will be having our monthly meetings from 6:30 pm-8:30 pm on the Monday evening following the month's outing. It was determined that the meetings for February, March, April and May will be held at the Dare County Library in Kill Devil Hills, which was reserved during the meeting. Due to the tourist season, members felt it would be better to hold our monthly meetings in Elizabeth City during the months of June, July, August and September. We will explore whether to continue to have our meetings in Elizabeth City or move back to the Outer Banks for the remainder of 2009. We are looking to find a more permanent place to have our monthly meetings.

Appointments for secretary, treasurer, outings committee, programs/education committee, and exhibition/competition committee were discussed, and the following appointments were made: Berna Edmonds, treasurer, Katy Marchello, secretary and Bill Edmonds, chair of the outings and program committees. Bill Edmonds suggested combining the outings and programs committee into one as we are a small Region. Dave Huff, Jay Wickens and Grayson Via all volunteered to serve on the outings/programs committee. The exhibition/competition committee was discussed, but it was decided to table that committee for now. However, several members volunteered to look into places or businesses to have a group exhibit. Those members include Phyllis Kroetsch who will check the Moyock Visitor Center; Ray Midgett who will check on the Manteo Court House and the Judicial Center; and Dave Huff who will check with the local Master Gardener's for a booth at their annual sale.

The OBX website was discussed, and we are in need of an image that would be suitable as our permanent banner image. This image needs to represent our region and sized to 64 x 608 px. If you have an image that represents the OBX region please re-size to above pixels at 72dpi and email me the picture or bring the image with you to view on a laptop or screen projector at the February 23, 2009 meeting. At this time we plan to select an image to use as the banner image on the OBX website.

Members agreed to have Jared Lloyd’s grand prize winning image of the 2008 Wildlife in North Carolina Photo Competition be displayed on the home page as the cover photo until March. Then a rotating system will be installed so that everyone will have an opportunity to display an image as a cover photo for the OBX website.

Members agreed to have a quarterly photo contest, and this will occur at the meetings for April, July and October of this year. Topics and more details will be announced later for the contests.

Looking forward to seeing everyone in February.
