We have a lot going on right now that everyone needs to be aware of so PLEASE read this entire email thoroughly.
First, our November meeting is Thursday November 20 at the Olde North Charleston Meeting Place on Montague Avenue. Directions and a map will be at the end of this email. Our speaker will be Andy Steele. He will be sharing images and planning details on his recent trip to Yellowstone National Park. Andy is a great guy and a excellent photographer and I’m sure you will enjoy his presentation. Due to the length of last month’s presentation we did not have the chance to discuss and share the equipment and bags that were brought to the meeting. We have had several requests to try this again. So, I would like to ask those of you who would like to share the equipment you take into the field and how you pack it, to bring your equipment to this meeting and we’ll discuss this after Andy’s presentation.
Second, our November outing will be on Saturday, November 22nd at Colonial Dorchester State Historic Site. The park rests on the site of Dorchester, a trading town that flourished on the Ashley River inland from Charleston from 1697 through the Revolutionary War. Intact remains of the old town include the brick bell tower of St. George’s Anglican Church, a fort made of the oyster-shell concrete called tabby and part of a log wharf visible at low tide. When the town was abandoned after the Revolution, the forest and later a community park protected the site, leaving remarkably undisturbed evidence of village life just beneath the surface. There are a number of photographic opportunities at this site. There will be a $2 charge per person to get into the park payable at the gate. The gate opens at 9am. We will meet in the parking lot just after 9am.
To reach the site from Charleston, Mt. Pleasant, and James Island follow I-26 west to Exit 205 A (Hwy 78) to Ladson Rd. and turn left. Follow Ladson Rd. to Dorchester Rd (Hwy 642) and turn right. Turn left onto State Park Rd( approximately half a mile)
To reach the site from Edisto, Hilton Head and points south, take US 17N to SC 165 and turn left. (at Hardees) Follow 165 until it intersects with Dorchester Rd. and turn right. State Park Rd will be 2 miles on the right.
To reach the site from Columbia and points west, take I-26 east to exit 205A and follow directions for Charleston above.
