Rock Hill Blackjacks Heritage Preserve
Saturday, September 15, 7:30 am
Meeting Time and Location:
We will meet at the Blackjacks Heritage Preserve parking lot at 7:30 am. From the parking lot, we will walk the preserve trail, which is about a 2 mile loop.
Shoot Details:
The Rock Hill Blackjacks Heritage Preserve covers 291 acres at the edge of the city of Rock Hill in York County. This small area is all that remains of the once widespread prairie system in South Carolina. The easy trail through the preserve is about a two-mile loop from the parking lot. The trail is clearly marked, with occasional benches and a couple of picnic tables.
Our main focus will be the wildflowers that should be blooming, so come prepared with macro equipment. Three rare plant communities and 21 rare plant species are found on this property. Prairie flowers bloom in the summer and early fall . Schweinitz's Sunflower, a federally endangered species, blooms in late summer and early fall, along with purple phlox, false foxglove and blazing star. The springtime comes alive with color and thousands of wildflowers, including yellow sunflowers, purple and white violets, wild azalea, white flowered aster and pale purple flowering foxglove.
In addition to the flowers, Red-shouldered and Red-tailed Hawks might be spotted in a field managed as a hawk meadow by the parking lot. Songbirds abound in the preserve, as well as deer, turkeys, bobcats and foxes.
For more information on the Preserve, please see their website: http://www.dnr.sc.gov/managed/heritage/rockhlblkjacks/description.html .
Directions:
From I-77 exit 73 take SC 901to the SC 72 by-pass and turn right. Drive approximately 0.25 mile and turn right on Blackmon Rd. The Preserve parking lot is approximately 0.25 mile on the right.
