So the refuges out on the peninsula are shutting down their access to photographers to the area. Waterfowl impoundments that they once permited photographers to work from and set up portable blinds in now off limits. Sure, you are welcome to drive through the "wildlife drive" like everyone else, but that it.

This puts a serious damper on one of the most serious waterfowl photography spots in our region.

I have spent the last few days scouting the entire area to see what is happening as far as birds on the tried and true spots, as well as finidng new areas that allow photographers.

so far Mattamuskeet is the only lake holding birds out there in numbers. Of course this is still somewhat "preseason." Pungo and Phelps were completely empty.

Phelps allows open acces to the area through out the season to photographers, which is good for swans, but its not Mattamuskeet or Pungo.

A new area that I have been scouting for the last three days is the Morgan Futch Game Lands, located between the Alligator River bridge and Columbia. The the place with the big sign that says "Waterfowl Impoundments." Talking with one of the wildlife resource guys there, the area is fantastic for ducks. The feilds are beeing flooded as we speak but the standing timber is already outrages. There must have been a thousand wood ducks in a one 10 acre tract of flooded forest today. Only thing is, the outer edges are thickly covered. There are a few open areas in the tract of land but you are not going to have a succesfull day working the banks here. Waders, and a 4am breakfast are what it will take based upon the last 3 days of scouting. Bears here are innumerable. Everywhere you walk, there are black bear tracks. I even found a couple red wolf prints as well.

the morgan futch game lands have controlled scheduled hunts in the impoundments so that is definitlely something that needs to be taken into consideration. These things only happen on certain dates however. Come Feburary though, according the the guy in there i talked to, the hunts are over, the birds are in full breeding plumage, and numbering in the thousands.

Alligator River NWR is also currently filling thier impoundments along Milltail Creek rd, Sawyer Lake, and Twiford. No birds in there as of yet thos I would assume they are starting to come into Milltail Creek off of Buffalo City rd. I know that this refuge typically gets far more ducks, geese, and swans than Pea Island. However, I do not yet know that status of photographing in these areas once the birds arive. There is a covered blind on stilts along one of the impoundments.

I talked with the refuge biologist there a few months ago and she was just downright rude and unhelpfull. Though I suspect that she may have been leary of my questions considering the piping plover fiasco on the beach this summer.

If anyone knows of any other impoundments or proven waterfowl habitats please let me know!!!

are you saying that mattamuskeet is closed to photographers?

no im sorry thats not what i was getting at. there are certain areas that photographers have been able to access in the past where the concentration of waterfowl is very high. In these areas, photographers were allowed to come in before dawn and set up blinds to work out .... the whole nine yards. These areas however are now offlimits come Nov 1st - Feb 28. Areas outside of the impoundments are still accessible. However aside from hwy 94 that cuts through the middle of the lake, the only area that you can access without the use of a boat (which is also prohibited between those dates ont he lake) is the area where controled hunts are conducted 4 days a week.

Mattamsukeet NWR has, at least for the last 4 years, required a special use permit to access some of the areas that are closed to the general public. This includes many of the waterfowl impoundments that surround the lake. It is true that special use permits have become more difficult to obtain. Remember that the goal of managing this particular refuge is to provide a refuge for wintering waterfowl. Consistent disturbance to the birds interrupts their resting and feeding, which is critical to their survival and preparation for migration. Recently, there has been increased disturbance to waterfowl because people, including many photographers, are accessing areas that they don't have permission to access. This is likely the primary reason for the limited access. Even some of us that have been able to obtain special use permits for the last several years are having a more difficult time.

All this being said, there is still plenty of access to photograph at Mattamuskeet.

Morgan Futch can be full of birds, but as you stated it is difficult to photograph.

Alligator River NWR can also be difficult to access birds. Pea Island, particularly right now and at other times of the year, will have more birds than Alligator River.

Jared, you are welcome to contact me if you want (I have extended the offer a couple of times already) and I would be happy to join you at some point. I do a lot of waterfowl photography and have lots of locations that I like to go to...but it is really dependent upon water conditions during the given year.

Mark,
sorry that I havnt gotten up with you about going out and shooting. Durring the summer and early fall, much of my shooting is done on a last minute basis... as in a tour doesnt book for that afternoon or something to this nature. Now that the season has died off, I have alot more time on my hands and can actually plan a trip to shoot. What is your schedual looking like this week?

When I talked to the guy up at the refuge office, he made it sound more like they just got tired of dealing with the permiting proccess. Disturbance of wildliffe or increased disturbance would make a lot more since than the conversation I had with them. Ultimately, he said it was just starting to become a hassel.
