Can anyone recommend a good ball head for less than $150?

Jennifer,
Put an ad in the Buy-Swap-Sell forum, you never know. Someone may have a good used ballhead you could pick up. Good ballheads as you probably know can easily run $250-$400.

Unfortunately, while you can certainly get a ballhead for $150, a GOOD ballhead is going to run $300+ new. I recently sold a use Acratech V2 ballhead on eBay. It cost $350 new and I got $250 for it used.
Best of luck!

Jennifer,
What is your heaviest lens/camera combination you would be using this ballhead for? I went on-line to Hunts and found two ballheads [one at $200 & the other around $160] that looked OK. You can always talk to Gary and tell him you are a member of CNPA and he might be able to give you a discount.
Let me know if you want more details on these ballheads.

Robert is absolutely right, the key factor in selecting a ballhead is the total weight your are going to put on it. A ballhead that would adequately support a Rebel with a kit lens is not going to handle a pro body with a long lens.
A quick search on "ballhead" on eBay produced around 39 items, including good names like Gitzo & Manfrotto.
