Ive been out at Alligator River NWR for the last two morning in a row. Milltail Creek Road is jumping with black bear in the mornings. Saturday morning produced 8 and this morning I counted 7. Also, Sawyer Lake road (the first open road on the right passed the operations facility) has a couple of big boys that I have seen both mornings - specificcally at the second to last cornfield before reaching buffalo city road. Both mornings I found a big boar (well over 300lbs) walking down the drainage area in the middle of this field and crossing the road into the swamp between 830 and 9 am.
The fields on the left just passed the operations facility has had a sow with two cubs that look to be around 2 years old as well as multiple adults. A couple of these guys are really big.
Ive seen a barred owl hanging out along the side of the sawyer lake road as well as a family of raccoons both mornings.
Prothonatory warblers are all over the place just after you make the left hand turn to follow the "wildlife drive."
Now I could be gravely wrong on this matter, but I believe i spotted a red cockaded woodpecker along sawyer lake road as well. I know that there are a token few that live in the refuge but I was under the impression that they stuck to the long leafs. I know theres a good population down the road at palmeto.
So far it seems as though the black bear show is over by 8am for the most part.
