This may be a dumb question, but I don't fly often with my camera equipment. So, do most people "carry-on" their tripod, or do you have to check it? Any flying suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I use a normal carry-on bag for the expensive stuff like the lenses and camera bodies. The tripod and head I take apart and put in a large checked bag. The real camera bag packed with clothes goes in this same large bag.

This has worked for me many times without a problem.

I put the tripod in the checked baggage and the head in the carry-on camera bag.

As a side note...thank you american airlines for tacking on a $15 fee for the 1st checked bag. That now means $40 each way to take two bags:mad:

I put the tripod in the checked baggage and the head in the carry-on camera bag.

Sometimes, I only bring my monopod with me, which I can pack in my carry-on bag.

I travel allot, and I'm now looking for a tripod that I can fit in a overhead bag, as I have had too many problems this year with my bags not catching up with me for 1 - 4 days. This has happened to me 3 times this year.

Thanks,

Usually domestic flights won't have a problem with you carrying on a tripod, but I have had trouble on international flights coming back to the US. With security the way it is anymore, be prepared to put it in your checked luggage (you could put an eye out with it you know  ).

In my experience, I have removed the tripod head and put it in my checked-in luggage. I then carry the tripod with me along with my camera bag. I would never ever trust these filthy airline personnel to handle the camera gear with care. And usually when I've mentioned that my carry on is my camera bag they have let me carry it on board.

Cheers!
