Phelps Lake Night Photography
August 18 @ 6:00 pm - 11:59 pm
Night Photography at Pettigrew State Park on Lake Phelps to photograph the milky way and the comet (if it is
The potential dates for the trip are August 20, plus or minus three
days, to take advantage of the moonless, dark sky on these dates. This
trip will be VERY dependent on the weather since we will need a good,
clear, cloudless night to photograph the milky way and comet. As a
result, the actual date will be decided a day or two before the trip is
scheduled. Since many folks will be traveling from the Raleigh area,
you may want to consider staying over night in one of the motels in
Plymounth, either the Holiday Inn Express or Rodeway Inn. The Holiday
Inn currently will give a rate of $99 per night if you ask for the
Photographer’s Rate. Everyone will be responsible for making their own
reservations and for cancellation if the trip dates change. Due to the
pandemic situation, the only restaurants in the area are fast food
take-out. So we suggest that you plan to bring most of your food for
the duration of the trip.
SINCE THE PANDEMIC IS STILL RAGING, EVERYONE WILL BE EXPECTED TO WEAR A
MASK WHEN THE GROUP IS TOGETHER AND TO MAINTAIN SAFE DISTANCING. IF YOU
REFUSE TO WEAR A MASK, THEN PLEASE DON’T ATTEND THIS TRIP!
Bob Cassanova will be leading this trip and will send out a brief “night
photography how-to” to all who express any interest in this trip.
Generally, you will need a camera capable of 30 sec exposure and ISO of
3200, high quality lens (wide and normal focal length), sturdy tripod,
bug repellent and headlamp with red LED. Equatorial mount is optional.
Other details to be included in the “how-to”.
